We would like to invite you to a talk by Dr. Adam Craig Schwartz (Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology and HKBU) titled “Happiness in China circa 1200 BC”.
A major oracle bone archive discovered in 1991 (and completely published in 2003) at the former center of the Late Shāng dynasty kings (Ānyáng, Hénán province) affords a coherent and unified picture into what things brought happiness to a man of royal pedigree at the commencement of China’s historical period (ca. 1200 BC) and how happiness was systematically ‘guaranteed’ by his diviners. Prior to this discovery we lacked a structured and detailed account based on primary sources of what caused a person’s happiness at this time, and we knew basically nothing about what brought happiness to those other than the Shāng kings.
